This article from Time magazine isn't new, but I realized tonight after reading it again, that it had never been shared here on the farmers' market blog. Though a little long, it is definitely worth the read to follow the author's struggle with which is better--eating organic or eating local.
I hate to give away the ending, but in case you don't take the time to read the whole article, this quote is worth sharing:
But when it comes to my..."whole" foods rather than my convenience foods--I would still rather know the person who collects my eggs or grows my lettuce or picks my apples than buy 100% organic eggs or lettuce or apples from an anonymous megafarm at the supermarket. Choosing local when I can makes me feel more rooted, and (in part because of that feeling, no doubt) local food tastes better.
The customers at the fruit market I blog for seem to prefer local over organic, very consistently. Can you blame them? We're surrounded by good food out here in the Northwest!
